Crossing the Egypt Jordan Border – Is it Still Possible?

While it might seem like it at first glance, there is no direct land border connecting Jordan and Egypt. This is because, between the two countries a small strip of Israeli territory juts out to form its only access to the Red Sea at the city of Eilat.

The Jordan Egypt border remains open. These are your options for crossing.

Therefore, traveling between Jordan and Egypt requires some planning to cross either via navigating two separate land borders or ferry services – especially considering recent tensions.

This guide covers the best ways to navigate this journey, including options for air, land, and sea travel, as well as essential information for a smooth crossing.

Key Takeaways

  • Travelers can cross the Jordan-Egypt border via direct flights, land routes through Israel, or the Aqaba-Nuweiba ferry.
  • Key border crossings include the Taba border crossing via land, and Aqaba Port via sea crossing.
  • We recommend traveling via the Aqaba Nuweiba ferry. It is the most straightforward and cheapest method to navigate between the two countries.
  • Even throughout the latest Israeli aggressions against Gaza and Iran, the ferry services remain operational. Land and air crossings are heavily restricted.

Overview of the Jordan-Egypt Border

Jordan Egypt Map
The Jordan Egypt border on a map.

The Jordan-Egypt border, primarily defined by the Gulf of Aqaba, is a maritime boundary that holds significant historical and geopolitical importance. Established following the 1921 agreement between Britain, Jordan, and Egypt, this border has seen a century of shifting dynamics influenced by conflicts, treaties, and broader Middle Eastern geopolitics.

Besides the sea boundary, there is no actual land border separating Jordan and Egypt. Instead, both countries border Israel in the East and the West respectively.

Traveling between Jordan and Egypt either requires crossing through Israel due to the lack of a direct land border, taking a ferry to cross the Red Sea or an international flight.

Currently, the best, most reliable and safest option to travel between the two countries is the Aqaba Nuweiba ferry.Flight services might be interrupted due to Isreali bombardments in Gaza, the West Bank and Iran as well as Iranian bombardments of Israel.

Crossing Borders Between Jordan and Egypt

Desert Road in Jordan
Your choice is between air, sea and land crossings.

Generally, there are three ways to cross from Jordan to Egypt and vice versa: flights, land borders and ferries.

Whether you choose the speed and convenience of direct flights, the land route through Israel borders, or the scenic ferry journey across the Red Sea, there is a few things to keep in mind when planning your trip.

Direct Flights

Direct flights between Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport and Amman Queen Alia International Airport are the most popular choice for those who prioritize speed and convenience.

Key points include:

  • Flight duration is approximately 1 hour , making it the quickest way to travel between the two countries.
  • Multiple daily flights are available, providing flexibility for travelers.
  • Booking tickets in advance is advisable to secure better prices and availability.

However, it’s essential to stay updated on any flight restrictions, as some airports in the region might be affected by the ongoing Israeli escalation of the Gaza war. Currently, the Israeli and Iranian airspaces are completely closed, while the Lebanese and Jordanian airspaces were at least partially open.

Our recommendation: Avoid risking your flight tickets going to waste due to airspace closures and opt for the Aqaba Nuweiba ferry crossing for a more tranquil and hassle-free border crossing.

Land Borders

As there is no direct land border between the two countries, travelers must pass through Israel to enter Jordan and Egypt respectively. This journey involves crossing into Israel at the Taba-Eilat border and exiting it again at the Eilat-Aqaba border – two border crossings in total.

While this is technically possible, there is a few possible roadblocks making the land border crossing more of a hassle. First, you will have to not only check visa requirements for Jordan or Egypt, but also for Israel.

Also, while the processes on the Egyptian border are usually quick, you will have to plan for longer processing times at the Israeli border. Partial closures and extensive screenings are common practice here. Adding another border crossing to the mix also means more visa costs and bus transfers.

Most importantly, you need to keep an eye on the news, if you are looking into the Egypt-Israel-Jordan crossing. Recently, the Israeli border has been affected by partial or full closure following the Iranian bombardments of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa. This is true for June 2025 and might stretch well into the summer months until August.

Our recommendation: Once again, save yourself the hassle and scrap the land border crossing between Jordan and Egypt for now. Even if you are lucky and the borders are open at the date of your trip, you will almost certainly face long waiting times and extensive screening.

Update August 2025: Recent information indicates that the Egypt Israel border is once again open for tourists. This situation, however, is subject to changes. So, please make sure to check with Egyptian authorities a few days before to ensure a smooth crossing.

Sea Routes

For a more reliable, cost-effective and safe journey, we recommend taking a ferry across the Red Sea.

The Aqaba-Nuweiba ferry service, operated by AB Maritime, is the best choice for crossings between Egypt and Jordan:

  • The trip takes approximately four hours.
  • Ferries between Nuweiba and Aqaba rund once a day, six days of the week.
  • Delays are common, so plan your pick-up at the port flexibly.
  • Tickets can be conveniently purchased online, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Despite the current Israeli aggression in the Middle East, the ferry services remain operational, providing a reliable and scenic route for travelers. For more detailed information, check out our full-length article on sea routes between Jordan and Egypt.

Alternatively, there is some speedboat crossings between Taba and Aqaba. However, they run less frequently and we currently do not have information, if they continue to run after recent events.

Key Border Crossings from Egypt to Jordan

Camel on the Road from Taba to Eilat
The most important crossings are at Taba and Aqaba.

When it comes to crossing the Jordan-Egypt border, two key points stand out: the Taba border crossing and the Aqaba Port. Let’s dive into the specifics of these essential crossings.

Taba Border Crossing

The Taba border crossing is a crucial entry point for travelers moving between Egypt and Jordan. To complete this crossing, travelers must first pass through Israel, which involves two separate checkpoints: the Eilat-Aqaba crossing and the Taba-Eilat crossing. Upon reaching the Taba border, travelers are required to pay an exit fee of 100 ILS plus a 5 ILS surcharge.

Transportation to the Taba border is convenient, with options such as Egged Route 15 buses from Eilat Central Bus Station taking you almost directly to the border. While the Taba border crossing is known for its efficient processing times, travelers frenquently experience long screenings and waiting times, too.

Important: As of now, the Israeli side of the land crossing is closed due to the escalation of the Israeli war on Gaza. Therefore, it is currently not possible to travel via the Taba Border Crossing.

August Update: To our knowledge, the Taba Border Crossing is currently open. This may, however, change without prior notice. Make sure to check with personell on the Egyptian border at least a day before crossing.

Aqaba Port and Nuweiba Port

Aqaba Port and Nuweiba Port are the remaining and most significant entry points, particularly for those opting for sea travel. Both ports are rather small and mostly cater towards boat travelers, making immigration and exit procedures relatively straightforward.

Key features include:

  • Facilities for all border procedures, money exchanges and waiting areas.
  • Ferry services operating between Aqaba and Nuweiba.
  • Tickets booths at the terminal – although we recommend booking tickets online.
  • Daily departures enhancing travel options for tourists.

Travelers can enjoy the scenic views of the Red Sea during their journey, making the ferry ride not just a means of transport but also a memorable part of the travel experience.

But do note, that delays are super common. Also, the ferry is usually almost fully-booked, resulting in a scramble and long lines upon disembarking the boat. So, make sure to plan with at least two hours of flexibility, in case you are looking into hiring a driver to pick you up from the port.

How to Cross the Egypt Jordan Border without a Problem

Nuweiba Aqaba ferry
Take the Nuweiba Aqaba ferry for a smooth transfer.

For the smoothest border crossing, opt for the Nuweiba Aqaba ferry. We took the ferry in the summer of 2023 and have some interesting insider tips to share. These are our top 5 tips for a smooth border crossing between Egypt and Jordan.

  1. Required Documents: A valid passport is essential and should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. Depending on your nationality, you may also need a visa. Make sure to bring a printed ferry ticket and respect the luggage requirements by AB Maritime.
  2. Visa Options: To enter Jordan, we recommend booking the Jordan pass ahead of time. It weaves your visa fee and allows you to stay in Jordan for up to 30 days. When entering Egypt, you can choose between a free 14-day visa for the Sinai Peninsula and a $25 month-long visa for all of Egypt.
  3. Travel Insurance: Travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation is strongly recommended. This ensures that you are prepared for any unforeseen medical emergencies during your journey.
  4. Customs Procedures: Check before crossing, if you happen to carry any illegal substances or devices, including gps trackers and drones. For souvenirs, check if your goods cross any limits and if you have to declare them at customs.
  5. Transport to and from the border: Hire taxis in advance and share them with other travellers to cut down costs. While there is bus links, delays may cause you to miss your bus and be dependent on higher taxi prices in front of the port.

From the ancient wonders of Petra to the vibrant coral reefs of Sharm El Sheikh, the journey between Jordan and Egyptian Egypt offers access to some of the most breathtaking destinations in the Middle East.

Let’s explore some of our favourites on the respective sides of the crossing:

Jordan: Amman, Petra & Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour
Explore the otherworldly landscape of Wadi Rum.

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a city where modernity meets ancient history. Visitors can explore the Citadel and the Roman Theater, both of which offer a glimpse into the city’s rich past. Amman’s vibrant culture and bustling markets make it a must-visit destination for travelers in Jerusalem.

Petra, known as the Rose City, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Its stunning rock-cut architecture and intricate water conduit system attract millions of visitors each year. The entrance fee to the Petra Archaeological Area is included in the Jordan Pass.

The Wadi Rum desert in Southern Jordan is located just one hour from the Aqaba Port. The characteristic sandstone formations and red sand of the desert, earned it the nickname ‘Mars on Earth’ and the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We recommend starting your Jordan trip with a Jeep tour adventure in Wadi Rum on your first day before heading to Petra and Amman.

Egypt: Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh & the Red Sea

Dahab diving
Explore the coral reefs of Dahab.

The Sinai Peninsula is a region of diverse landscapes, from mountains to deserts, offering many opportunities for hiking and exploration.

The best place to stay and experience the nature of the Sinai Peninsula might just be the small town of Dahab. Originating as a Bedouin town, the coastal Dahab has become a hub for diving and rock climbing.

Take a chance and stay in Dahab for at least a week to really take in the special atmosphere of this place. Take a stroll along the beach, visit one of the many small coffee shops, snorkel at Eel Garden to see some corals and watch the sun set over the mountains of the Sinai. You won’t regret it.

Visitors to Dahab can also explore nearby attractions such as St. Catherine’s Monastery, which holds significant historical and religious importance. The combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes the Sinai Peninsula and Dahab a must-visit for travellers.

And What About Israeli Stamps?

One questions that pops up repeatedly when researching travel in this part of the Middle East is: Will I have any problems entering Egypt or Jordan if I have an Israeli visa stamp in my passport? The answer is no.

You will not have a problem with Israel stamps, because years ago the Israeli government changes course in its dealings with Israeli visas. Now, travellers do not receive any more stamps in their passports when entering and leaving the territory.

Instead, their stamps are dealt on a separate sheet of paper, a blue slip. When crossing through the Israel Jordan border crossing or the Egypt Israel border, you will, however, receive a visa stamp by the Egyptian authorities or the Jordanian authorities on the other side of the border.

This will not cause you any problems when travelling in Egypt or Jordan, but could be an indicator of your stay in Israel for other countries that are known to refuse travellers who have stayed on Israeli territory before, such as Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Kuwait, and Yemen. This refusal is either linked to the non-recognition of the state of Israel or the condemnation of the illegal occupation of the territories of the state of Palestine.

The Bottom Line

Crossing the Jordan-Egypt border has certainly been easier in the past, but is still possible with just a bit of planning. For now, we cannot recommend any crossings by land or air, as both land crossings and airspaces are heavily restricted. Instead you will have the best experiences with the Aqaba Nuweiba ferry linking Egypt and Jordan via the Red Sea.

By being well-prepared and informed, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. So pack your bags and get ready to explore the wonders of Jordan and Egypt.
