A Quick Introduction to Cappadocia’s Travel Seasons 

Many immediately think of the warm summers on the Turkish Riviera when they think about planning a trip to Cappadocia. They picture the hot sun, sweltering heat and afternoons on the beach. And while they are not wrong about Coastal Turkey, they would be mistaken about Central Turkey. 

While the coastal regions of Turkey enjoy a warm Mediterranean climate, Central Cappdocia experiences a temperate continental climate. This means equally hot temperatures in summer, but much cooler weather in spring and fall and proper cold winters with snow and all. In terms of temperatures, you may experience anything from 30°C+ in summer to freezing temperature as low as -5°C in winter. 

So, if you are planning to visit Cappadocia, you better do your homework, because if not, you might end up freezing all throughout your trip, with all of your planned activities falling through, because you didn’t care to check the weather beforehand. 

The Best Time to Travel to Cappadocia

If you were to ask us, “What is the best time to travel to Cappadocia, Turkey”, we wouldn’t hesitate to tell you to come in early April or late September. When researching further, you might also see that other pages recommend visiting in summer. We don’t agree with this advice, however. 

While we understand why providers would want to convince people travelling during the summer holidays, that visiting Cappadocia in peak summer is a great idea, we have two strong arguments against it: people and heat. Summer is peak season in Cappadocia. It’s full of tourist and swelteringly hot with no beach around to cool down. So, how about coming in April or September instead? 

Late spring (April) and early fall (September) are the best time to visit Cappadocia, because they combine pleasant weather with smaller crowds. Daytime temperatures range from 15°C and 25°C, winds are fair and rain does occur, but not too frequently. 

Our Experience Visiting Cappadocia in Fall

We visited Cappadocia in later October, pretty much at the end of shoulder season, before the onset of winter. During our four days in Göreme and Kayseri, we only go light rain on a few occasions and no snow at all. The daytime temperatures were pleasant enough to walk around in a longsleeve and when dining out in the evening, we would bring along a light jacket to stay warm.

We visited the fairy chimneys and went on two tours to the Red Valley and the Pigeon Valley. We especially enjoyed the Pigeon Valley as the path led us through a forest with the most amazing fall colours. The next day, we also visited the Derinkuyu underground city, which was not cold at all. The only thing we couldn’t do due to strong winds, was the hot air balloon ride. 

Which Season to Visit Cappadocia in and Why

Generally, you can distinguish between three time windows when picking the right time to visit Cappadocia: spring/fall (with almost identical conditions), summer (hot and dry) and winter (cold and wet). Here’s what every seasons has going for itself. 

Spring / Fall: Best Time to Visit 

The spring months from March to April and the fall months from September to October generally have the best conditions for visiting the Cappadocia region. These time windows are considered the shoulder seasons before and after the tourism surge in summer. 

While bringing significantly less tourists than in summer, these months are still fairly warm though. Daytime temperatures still rise beyond 25°C and nighttime temperatures don’t go below freezing just yet. As long as you bring along a jacket for the evenings, this time is just about perfect to visit Cappadocia. 

If you are planning to ride a Hot Air Balloon in Cappadocia, however, you should come with an open mind. In both spring and fall, winds are less predictable making cancellations of balloon flights more frequent. Still though, you will have pretty good chances of going on a flight, if you are just a bit flexible. 

Summer Months: Most Reliable for Hot Air Balloon Rides

While we recommend coming in spring or fall, most tourists actually flock to Cappadocia during the summer months. This is, for one, due to the summer holidays in Europe, but also due to the hot air balloon rides. 

In recent years, Cappadocia has become one of the most popular places in the world for hot air balloon rides. Its unique landscapes and beautiful sunrises just make the perfect backdrop for an early morning flight. And luckily for summer tourist, the summer months from May to August have the least wind, making them perfect for hot air balloon rides. 

Heavy tourism during the summer months also has its downsides, of course. Tourism hotspots, especially Göreme, are much more crowded and hotels and activities are more expensive, all while temperatures regularly soar past 30°C.

Winter Months: Most Affordable Time to Visit 

While winter in Cappadocia brings much colder weather, it’s not necessarily a time when you should avoid Cappadocia. All to the contrary, visiting Cappadocia during winter can be an amazing experience. 

For one, Cappadocia is much less frequented in the winter months, meaning that you can get some amazing deals on accommodations and tours. Moreover, many attractions are just as great in winter as they are in summer. The underground cities Derinkuyu and Kaymakli remain open year-round and the fairy chimneys are equally stunning decked in snow. 

Of course, winter in Central Turkey also brings along snowfall. This also impacts your chances of going on a hot air balloon flight. While we wouldn’t say it’s impossible to go on a balloon flight in winter, the cancellation rates reach as high as 50 % from November to February. In other words, your chances of going on a hot air balloon flight are those of a coin flip. Not great, but not terrible either. 

From Cave Hotels to Luxury Stays: Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is not one single town or place in Central Anatolia, but rather a spread-out area with several towns that make a great base for exploring Cappadocia. 

Some of the best towns to stay in are: Göreme, Ortasihar and Uçhisar. Here’s why: 

• Göreme: In Göreme, you will find many of Cappadocia’s iconic cave hotels that are modelled after the historic cave dwellings of the region. During our time in Cappadocia, we also stayed in Göreme. The hotel we stayed at was Shoestring Cave House. This hotel enchanted us with a beautiful room design, an en-suite hammam and stunning views of the fairy chimneys. 
• Ortahisar: If you are looking for more of a local feel, while still being well-connected to Cappadocia’s attractions, you might want to check out Ortahisar. This small village just south of Göreme is much calmer and features many more affordable options. For a great budget-friendly option with spectacular views, consider staying at Elaa Cave Hotel. 
• Uçhisar: Quite the opposite from Ortahisar, Uçhisar is considered a much more exclusive and luxurious destination in Cappadocia. Just a few minutes west of Göreme, this town caters more to upscale tourism.
