Are 2 Days in Cappadocia Even Enough?

A trip to Cappadocia, Turkey, is well worth it, no matter how long you decide to stay. Online you can see lots of people arguing that you should spend at least three days in Cappadocia and while it’s true that you can do more if you stay longer, two days in Cappadocia are absolutely enough for a first-time visitor.
On round-trip of Turkey, we also allocated 2 days and 2 nights to visiting Cappadocia and we felt that it was enough to get to know the region’s most important natural. & historical sites and to get to know some of its culture. Exploring the region as part of a guided tour also helped us not feel rushed along the way.
We do, however, recommend not to try and overdo it on your first trip to Cappadocia.
Be conservative and plan two activities maximum per day, one of them being a tour. Leave some space in your itinerary for rest and meals and keep your schedule free on the evenings. You will come to appreciate this time to enjoy your cave hotel or experience a Turkish night show.
One more thing: When you visit Cappadocia makes all the difference. For instance, outside of summer you may have to wait a day or two until your hot air balloon ride can actually take off. If you are unsure about when to visit Cappadocia, check out this guide to travel seasons in Cappadocia.
How to Get to the Cappadocia Region
Located deep inside Central Turkey, the Cappadocia Region is somewhat secluded from the larger cities in Turkey such as Istanbul and the capital city Ankara.
Still though, Cappadocia is fairly easily accessible in one of the following ways:
- From Istanbul: Ideally, you should just take a flight from Istanbul to either Kayseri Airport or Nevşehir Airport starting from just $ 46 (or 40 €) per person and trip. The flight takes around 1.5 hours and makes for the fastest transfer to Cappadocia. If you are not as short on time, you can also opt for an overnight bus to Göreme or a train journey with connections in Ankara and Kayseri.
- From Ankara: Similarly, you can also get from Ankara to Cappadocia by airplane though flights are not direct and a bit more expensive starting from $ 100 (or 86 €) per person and trip. Alternatively, you can take a driver overnight bus from Ankara to Göreme or take a train down to Kayseri and hop on a bus for the remainder of the journey.
- From Kayseri Airport: Kayseri Airport, located in Kayseri City, is the busiest airport in the area serving multiple daily connections from Istanbul and international European destinations. From Kayseri, you can simply take a bus to Göreme which should take you no more than 1.5 hours. Buses leave from Kayseri Terminal which is located a bit outside the city center.
- From Nevşehir Airport: While Nevşehir Airport is not as busy as Kayseri Airport, it is still a great option for direct flights from Istanbul. Nevşehir Airport is not located in Nevşehir, but rather in Tuzköy. From there, you can either take an airport shuttle to Nevşehir and take a connecting taxi from there or get a direct taxi to Göreme. This will take you around one hour altogether.

What to Pack for your Cappadocia Trip
When it comes to packing your bags for Cappadocia, you really don’t have to go overboard. Many of the things you need to pack are just the same you would pack for any other active summer holiday.
Here are five key items you should not forget to pack for Cappadocia:
- Sun Protection: In summer, Cappadocia receives plenty of sunlight hours and you will be outside for most of your two days. Packing sun protection with at least 50 SPF is therefore a must.
- Water Bottle: On day tours, you will be away from your hotel for up to eight hours at a time. Bring along your own water bottle and refill it at your hotel to avoid high prices at tourist sites.
- Hat & Sun Glasses: In Cappadocia, there is not much to shield you from the relentless sun apart from the rock formations and the odd tree. Make sure to pack a hat and sun glasses.
- A Scarf: If you are planning to visit an active mosque, remember that women cover their hair upon entering a mosque. This also applies to tourists. A scarf will be enough to cover your hair.
- Modest Clothing: Whether you are visiting a mosque or a church, you will want to cover your shoulders and your knees. Make sure to shirts with long sleeves and a long pair of pants.

Day One: Hot Air Balloon Ride & Göreme Open Air Museum

What better way is there to start your visit to Cappadocia than an early-morning hot air balloon ride with panoramic views of Cappadocia’s unique landscape? Hot air balloon rides are THE thing to do in Cappadocia. They usually start from one of the takeoff fields between Göreme and Çavuşin and fly over the Göreme National Park giving you an amazing bird’s eye view of Cappadocia’s iconic fairy chimneys.
Make sure to book your flight with a certified provider and for your very first morning in Cappadocia.
This is not only because the flight is a great introduction to Cappadocia, but also due to weather conditions. If winds are too strong, no balloon ride is allowed to take off. Booking for the first day, gives you the flexibility to reschedule your flight for the next morning. Refunds for cancelled flights are very common in Cappadocia.
After your sunrise balloon ride, we recommend joining the Red Tour. The Red Tour is one of Cappadocia’s most popular day tours that that to you to many of Göreme’s iconic sights such as the hidden cave churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum, the natural rock formations at Paşabağ, Cappadocia’s highest point Uçhisar Castle, Devrent Valley and Avanos Village, a small town known for its pottery making.
After resting up in the evening, use your first night to wander through the quiet alleyways of Göreme and have dinner at one of the town’s traditional restaurants. There, you can try many of Cappadocia’s staple dishes such as Testi Kebab, a variation of kebab served in a clay pot, Manti (Turkish dumplings) and a glass of local Cappadocian wine.

Day Two: Derinkuyu Underground City & Horseback Tour

In the course of your first day in Cappadocia, you will already have gotten an impression of early Christian life in Cappadocia . On your second day, you can dive even deeper – literally – into the region’s history. The Green Tour is yet another popular day tour in Cappadocia that takes you to more remote locations in South Cappadocia..
The Green Tour usually includes a tour of the Derinkuyu Underground City or the Kaymakli Underground City, extensive underground cities carved out by early Christians in the Byzantine Era, a walk through Ihlara Valley, the Selime Monastery, the Pigeon Valley and an Onyx Stone Workshop.
We joined this tour on our second day in Göreme and loved the contrast it presented against the sites you can find closer to Göreme.
While the Onyx Stone Workshop isn’t all that interesting, we throughly enjoyed exploring the cave dwellings, narrow tunnels and dark churches scattered all throughout Cappadocia’s lush landscape.
If you start the Green Tour early morning, you will have enough time to fit in a sunset horseback ride. Cappadocia might be known best for its rock formations and balloon rides, but for the longest time it was better-known as the ‘land of beautiful horses’.
Horses have been kept in Cappadocia for thousands of Years and remain an integral part of regional identity. Today, you can join a horseback ride in Cappadocia to explore some of the narrowest valleys of the region, such as the Rose Valley and the Red Valley. Settle down after by enjoying the hammam of your cave hotel or pop by now of the local spas for a rub-down.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia for 2 Days
For a first-time visit to Cappadocia, we highly recommend staying in Göreme as it is the main village of the Cappadocia region with the best access to local attractions, tours and neighbouring villages.
While you can also choose to go with other, less-frequented villages, you might need a bit more time to transfer in and out of these and have less options for dining out.
These are the best villages to stay in the Cappadocia region and the best accommodation options:
- Göreme: Göreme is Cappadocia’s main tourist hub nestled right in-between the region’s fairy chimneys and the Göreme National Park right to the east. In Göreme, you absolutely have to stay in one of the cave hotels that are inspired by Cappadocia’s historic cave dwellings. We opted for the Shoestring Cave House, offering suites with private hammams, and could not have been happier.
- Uçhisar: Located just a few minutes down to the road from Göreme, Uçhisar is dominated by Uçhisar Castle that towers over the town. Otherwise, the aesthetics of Uçhisar as very similar to those you can find in Göreme. In Uçhisar, you can find more options for cave hotels along with more conventional, and affordable boutique hotels such as the Rupestral House Hotel.
- Nevşehir: Nevşehir is the administrative center and the most populous city of the Cappadocia region. It is more removed from the local attractions and features fewer of the iconic fairy chimneys. Then again, Nevşehir sits at a central location allowing you to transfer more easily between Nevşehir Airport and local attractions. For a cave-style hotel, check out Babili Cappadocia Cave.
At a glance, these are the ideal hotels in Cappadocia for 2 days according to the city you are staying in:
Göreme | Shoestring Cave House | starting from $ 145 per night
Uçhisar | Rupestral House Hotel | starting from $ 165 per night
Nevşehir | Babili Cappadocia Cave | starting from $ 68 per night |
The Bottom Line

In 2 days in Cappadocia you cannot possibly do everything there is to do in Cappadocia, but you can get a good idea of the region and see the main attractions without rushing. To make your 2-day Cappadocia itinerary as smooth as possible, remember not to pack too many activities in one day and to leave some space to enjoy your cave hotel in the evening.
Oh, and one more thing. If you are traveling to Cappadocia outside of the summer months, always schedule your hot air balloon ride for your first morning to leave some flexibility for possible re-scheduling. Ballon rides are weather-dependent, and the weather can be unpredictable at times.
